Bicycle CPT – a WDC 2014 Recognised Project

We are thrilled to announce that our campaign Bicycle Cape Town has been selected as a World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 Project!

Created in 2012 Bicycle CPT is a community platform for Cape Town’s emerging urban bicycle culture. The campaign aims to inspire more people to ride bicycles, facilitating a shift from car-dominated to carbon free mobility and the creation of a more livable city.

Bicycle Cape Town  is supported by a network of organisations, businesses and activists who are passionate about transforming Cape Town into a truly bicycle-friendly city, one in which sustainability, a healthy lifestyle and a sense of community are celebrated and explored.

At the heart of the campaign is an online platform that uses social media and crowd sourcing tools to enable the cyclists of CPT to share knowledge and have their say about the issues that affect them. With a strong focus on community building and education, our platform showcases the work of local advocacy groups, bicycle design and community initiatives – connecting to ‘All Things Bicycle’ – from bicycle friendly venues, to bicycle shops and events. Our online Learning Centre provides easy to use guidelines for newbie cyclists and those curious about urban riding and commuting.

Beyond the online platform, we are working with various businesses to grow a network of bicycle friendly venues and eco-mobility zones within the city. We are also assisting Thundafund (SA’s crowd funding platform) with bicycle related projects (e.g. Espinaca – a scheme to deliver bread by bicycle in Khayelitsha).

You can now follow Bicycle Cape Town via the hashtag #WDC422 – stay tuned for more exciting initiatives next year…
