In Durban’s inner city, a light shines from a small school building while the rest of the city is plunged into another Eskom power outage. Behind the glowing windows is a powerhouse of learning and a true beacon for green education in South Africa.
In collaboration with Wildfire, LearnaTrade has developed an alternative technology course. This SETA accredited school, founded in 2007 to teach traditional electronics, is now incorporating solar and wind power technology training into the curriculum. The school also runs all its electronic teaching equipment off solar pv cells and hopefully, in the near future, the entire school will run entirely on solar power.
Other initiatives in the pipeline:
• urban food garden / demonstration garden
• rainwater harvesting system
• worm farm to recycle organic waste
